Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goitre

Congenital Hypothyroidism with Goitre

Any dog carrying the CHG gene will never be affected by this disorder, however breeders should be making breeding choices to avoid any occurence of affected pups.  Unfortunately affected pups only survive a matter of weeks as the disease is fatal at the neonatal stage.

Testing for CHG is not widespread at present but a number of breeders and breed clubs are currently raising funds to enable the development of a buccal swab test to make testing for the disease easier to undertake.  The current testing regime involves sending blood samples to the USA and unfortunately samples can often be destroyed before arrival at the lab for testing.

 Latest news!!!!

CHG testing is now readily available and I will be gradually testing all my dogs. In the mean time any planned matings are being done with careful research into each dogs background to ensure that no affected pups are produced.
